The Mihrab (Prayer Niche) was created with a lot of artistic
views and purpose with religion. The Mihrab was created in 755 A.D, originating
in Iran, Isfahan. The mihrab is so significant in archaeology due to
the existence of an appropriately arranged mihrab in a building. Because of this, the artwork can
indicate Muslim attendance in a settlement. The prayer niche is the main focus inside of
a mosque. A mosque is a symbol
of Islamic architecture. This architecture has an important purpose by
displaying the power of Allah the Almighty. The embellishments are to be
engaged as part of mosque factors.
It is more than to be just aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. The location
is in the qibla wall, which is oriented toward the holy city of Islam. This
city is called Mecca. With the wall being designed this way, it allows Muslims
to face the wall when praying. This prayer niche was set into the qibla
wall of a school in Isfahan originally. The school was considered theological.
The school studied nature of God and religious belief. The piece however, is
now considered the Madrasa Imami. It is known as this because it was created
right after the end of the Ilkhanid dynasty. Joining a myriad of cut glazed
tiles to construct its intricate arabesque and complex designs created the
mihrab. The Prayer Niche is now known as one of the earliest and premium
examples of mosaic tile work. In the Islamic world, the extremely detailed work
of religious architectural decoration, this mihrab is one of the most
significant works in the medieval period. Artists of this generation were very
talented craftsmen in woodcarving. These artists combine the decorative
scrolling and geometric forms classic of Arabic appealing wood. This medium of
art originated in Turkey. The piece is a mosaic of polychrome-glazed cut tile
on stone paste body. This is then set into mortar. The dimensions of this piece
are about 343.1 centimeters in height and 288.7 centimeters in width. The piece
is concave for people to use for prayer. This section of the piece is 251.5 by
105.4 centimeters.
The Ilkhanid Mihrab is beautiful with all the vibrant colors. The geometrical designs really show the Islamic building style.
